Gobardhan Matha : |
|
A matha is a term for monastic and similar religious establishments of the Hindu tradition. A matha is usually more formal, hierarchical, and rule-based than an ashram.
Govardhana matha is located in the city of Puri in Orissa, and is associated with the Jagannath temple. It is one of those four cardinal mathas said to have been founded by Adi Shankara, and is the eastern matha. As per the tradition initiated by Adi Shankara, it is in charge of the Rig Veda. It was established by the great Sankaracharya in the Swargadwar area. Puri became one of the four important dhamas of Hinduism because of the establishment of this Matha by the great Saint. The head of this Matha also known as Sankaracharya is the permanent head of the Muktimandap of the Sri Jagannath temple by virtue of his position. Its current head or Shankaracharya is Nishcalananda Sarasvati. He was appointed by his predecessor Niranjandev Tirth in the early. |
