The Brahmeswara Temple, at Bhubaneswar in Orissa, erected at the end of the 9th century AD, is richly carved inside and out.At Bhubaneswar, 7,000 Hindu shrines, dating from the 8th to the 12th centuries, once encircled Bindu Sarovar, the sacred artificial lake.
Built in 1050 A.D. from ainscription, originally attached to this temple but now missing ,It is learnt that it was built to enshirine a Linga called Brahmeswara by kolavati, The mother of the Somavamsi king Uddyatakesari, in the latter's eighteenth regnal year at a locality known as Siddhatirha at Ekmra. Brahmeswara Temple depicts the mature Orissan style of temple architecture . the deul and the jagmohan are both intricately carved and for the first time in temple architectural history musicians and dances appear on the outer walls and iron beams find their first use . one of the lost inscriptions stated that a queen Kolavati presented 'many beautiful women' to the temple, and it has been suggested that this is an evidence of the devadasi tradition which assumed such importance in later orissan temple architecture and temple life. |
